What is the difference between evidence search and reference verification?

Evidence search starts with a claim or research question and finds candidate papers with available abstracts or passages to inspect. Reference verification starts with citations you already have and compares their details with scholarly records. Use both when you need to find sources and check an existing bibliography.

Does a matched reference prove that it supports my claim?

No. A match shows that citation details correspond to an available scholarly record. It does not establish that the study population, methods, results, or conclusions support your exact wording. Read the original paper and judge the context.

What does “not found” mean? Is the reference fake?

Not necessarily. A record may be outside a source's coverage, indexed under different metadata, or missing a DOI. Treat unmatched items as needing manual review, not as proof of fabrication.

Can LitSource catch fake references generated by AI?

LitSource compares citation details with available scholarly records and flags unmatched or inconsistent entries for review. It can help you investigate fabricated or hallucinated references, but no database match is not proof of fabrication, and a matching record does not prove claim support. Open the source record and original paper before relying on a citation.

Which databases does LitSource use, and how current are the records?

Search and verification draw on sources including PubMed, PMC, Crossref, OpenAlex, and Semantic Scholar. Coverage and update timing vary; no single source contains every paper.

Does LitSource check the full text of every paper?

LitSource displays available abstracts or full-text passages when accessible. Publisher restrictions and source availability vary. Confirm the relevant passage in the original paper before citing.

Can I enter claims in multiple languages?

Yes. You can enter claims or research questions in multiple languages. Results depend on scholarly-source coverage, and the papers returned may be written in a different language.

Can I export references to Zotero, EndNote, or Mendeley?

You can export supported citation formats such as RIS and BibTeX, then import them into compatible reference managers including Zotero, EndNote, or Mendeley. This is file export, not a direct sync.

How are credits used? Am I charged for failed searches?

Each successful literature search costs 1 credit. Citation verification costs 3 credits for each batch of up to 10 references. Search credits are not deducted when no qualifying results are found.

Is there a free plan?

The Free plan includes 10 credits per month. Higher-volume users can choose a monthly or annual Pro plan, or purchase the one-time Trial Plan with 300 credits and Pro access for 30 days.

Is my research data and draft content private?

Connections use HTTPS (TLS) in transit, not end-to-end encryption. Requests may be processed by the services needed to provide search and analysis. Review the Privacy Policy before submitting unpublished or sensitive material.
