What this check is for
Generative models are useful drafting tools, but a fluent citation is not a database lookup. A model can combine a real journal with an invented title, merge authors from different articles, move a DOI to the wrong paper, or present a real paper as support for a claim it never tested. These errors can survive a quick visual scan because every individual field looks plausible.
ChatGPT can produce citation-shaped medical text from learned patterns without resolving a live publication record. This checker compares submitted references with available PubMed and DOI metadata so writers can separate a plausible-looking suggestion from a record that still needs source-level review.
